Description

headspace Cairns is seeking a Senior Mental Health Clinician to join our Outreach team. In this important role, you’ll engage with young people referred to the headspace Outreach Service, providing them with assessments, safety planning and brief intervention therapy. You’ll also coordinate care and connect them with appropriate services. The primary goal is to ensure young people receive high-quality, coordinated, and youth-friendly services that meet their mental health needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Psychosocial assessments & counselling: Provide assessments and counselling across various modalities (CBT, Narrative Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy)
- Intake, triage, and ongoing support: Conduct intake, triage, assessments, and provide ongoing support
- Case reviews: Participate in regular case reviews and multidisciplinary meetings to ensure the best outcomes for clients
- Engagement with stakeholders: Build strong rapport with stakeholders, clients, and families
- Risk assessments: Conduct and manage risk assessments to safeguard young people and families
- Service Development: Contribute to the ongoing development and improvement of headspace Outreach service delivery
- Community promotion: Engage in community activities to raise awareness and promote headspace services
As an outreach clinician, you’ll support young people in Cairns and the surrounding areas, including Innisfail, Ravenshoe, Herberton, Atherton, and Malanda. You’ll work co-located within community locations, providing essential resources, care, and support. You will have access to a company vehicle, and you will be required to stay overnight in these communities.

Who Are We Looking For?
We are looking for someone who excels in stakeholder engagement, builds strong rapport and has a deep understanding of family complexities. The ideal candidate will have community experience, clinical depth, and be a team player. You will embody the values of headspace: Inclusion, Collaboration, Agility, and Excellence.
Essential Requirements:
- Formal qualifications in Psychology, Social Work, Occupational Therapy, or Nursing (Mental Health) – with a minimum of 3-5 years of experience
- Current registration with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Authority (AHPRA) or the Australian Association of Social Workers (AASW)
- Current paid Blue Card (Social Workers only)
- Competence in mental health assessments and coordinating access to appropriate services
- Proven experience in risk assessment and managing risk to self or others
- Strong communication skills, including the ability to engage with young people, advocate for them, and build effective relationships with clients, staff, and stakeholders
- Current Queensland Driver’s Licence
