Data Architect
The Data Architect will play a pivotal role in the successful migration of data systems from legacy platforms to new. This individual will design, implement, and maintain the data architecture, ensuring that data is migrated, structured, and stored securely and efficiently while aligning with varying project's business requirements and the ICT environment. They will collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business experts, ICT, business analysts, and project managers, to ensure data integrity and seamless flow of data across platforms.
Whilst the position is an initial term of 12 months, RFDS Western Operations has a digital strategy underway, whereby this position has the potential to be extended.
About you
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Engineering or a related field.
- Advanced degrees or certifications, eg Certified Data Management Professional (CDMP) are a plus.
- Proven experience (5+ years) as a Data Architect or Data Engineer, with a focus on data migrations, system integrations, and enterprise data architecture.
- Experience with ETL tools and data integration platforms.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, Google Cloud) and on-premise data solutions.
- Knowledge of data modelling (e.g., star schema, entity-relationship models) and relational databases (e.g., SQL Server, Oracle, PostgreSQL).
- Familiarity with data governance practices and regulatory compliance requirements.
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and other data manipulation languages (e.g., Python, R, Java).
- Experience with cloud data platforms (e.g., Redshift, BigQuery, Azure Synapse).
- Strong understanding of data warehousing and data lakes architecture.
- Familiarity with data quality and data cleansing tools.
- Ability to manage and prioritise multiple tasks and projects with attention to detail.
- Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities, particularly in the context of data integration and migration.
About the role
Data Migration Strategy:
- Lead design and implementation of data migration strategies
- Develop data migration roadmaps
Architecture Design:
- Design and document target-state data architecture
- Design data models for integration and transformation
- Standardise data definitions and relationships
Data Integration & ETL:
- Oversee ETL pipeline development for data migration
- Ensure data is cleaned, consolidated, and integrated
Data Governance & Compliance:
- Ensure data architecture meets governance standards
- Define and enforce data quality standards and access controls
Collaboration & Stakeholder Management:
- Work with business experts, analysts, and ICT teams to gather requirements
- Lead stakeholder discussions to identify needs and develop solutions
Testing & Validation:
- Design and execute data validation tests
- Coordinate user acceptance testing (UAT)
Risk Mitigation:
- Identify migration risks (data loss, downtime, integration gaps)
- Define fallback and recovery plans
Documentation & Reporting:
- Maintain documentation for data architecture and migration plans
- Provide project status updates to senior leadership
