It is with deep sadness that we share the news that former RFDS Board chair (2008-2013) and former patron Major General the Honourable Michael Jeffery passed away peacefully at home on Friday the 18th of December.
In addition to his exemplary track record of national service and leadership, both as a soldier and as a civilian, Major General Jeffery had been actively involved in assisting the Royal Flying Doctor Service to raise charitable funds for many years prior to his appointment as national chair of the Service – a position he held from 2008 until 2013.
In 2010 Major General Jeffery said “My main concern (as chair of the national board) is to ensure we continue to provide the very best medical support, particularly to remote and outback Australia -- to ensure this happy state of affairs continues and, where we can, improve what we do.”
Current Governor-General David Hurley, a former military man, has paid tribute to Jeffery.
"As a nation, we give thanks for Michael's extraordinary lifetime of service. He was, by every measure, a great Australian."
The Royal Flying Doctor Service sends condolences to the whole Jeffery family at this sad time.
