A snake bite can be frightening, but staying calm and acting quickly can make all the difference.
Snake bites are often painless, and symptoms can be delayed. Protect yourself and others with simple yet effective first aid.
If you have a close encounter with a snake or you see bite marks, follow these simple steps:
1. Dial Triple 0 – Contact emergency services immediately.
2. Stay Still – Limit your movement to slow the spread of venom.
3. Apply a Pressure Bandage - Wrap a pressure bandage around the bite, similar to how you would strap a sprained ankle. Any firm material, like clothing, a towel or a bedsheet will work if you don’t have a pressure bandage. Ensure it's tight but doesn't cut off circulation.
4. Splint the Affected Limb – If you’ve been bitten on your arm and/or leg, keep it still with a splint, after you’ve applied pressure. Tie a long, rigid item to your limb, like a piece of wood, rolled up newspaper, or walking stick.
Snake venom spreads through the lymphatic system, so staying still and applying pressure gives emergency services crucial time to help. Fast, effective first aid can save lives.

Preventing snake bites
It may sound obvious, but the best way to protect yourself is to avoid getting bitten! Stay alert during snake season and reduce your risk:
- Watch for snakes, especially in long grass or bushland.
- Wear long pants and sturdy boots to protect yourself.
- Always carry a pressure bandage and a phone to call Triple 0.
- If you encounter a snake, back away calmly—never try to approach or touch it.
Remember, snakes are protected species in New South Wales, and it's illegal to kill them. If you need to relocate a snake, contact a professional snake handler.

Did you know?
Medical professionals don’t need to know the snake’s species to treat the bite.
If you’ve been bitten, you don’t need to identify it or take a photo, and you should never try to bring the snake with you to the hospital or clinic. It won’t help your recovery and you’re more likely to get bitten again!
Just call 000 so you can get the help you need.
