As the Royal Flying Doctor Service (Queensland Section) (RFDS) this week celebrates 94 years in the air, a national competition has launched to win a money can’t buy outback experience including a flight aboard an RFDS aircraft and VIP tickets to the sold-out Birdsville Big Red Bash.
Each July, Birdsville’s iconic Big Red Bash kicks off under the open skies of Australia’s Simpson Desert. Thousands of people from around Australia - and the world - head into the desert for the most remote music festival on the planet.
The lucky winners of the competition will be flown from their closest capital city to Birdsville before being transferred to the Big Red Bash site. From their glamping accommodation, they’ll experience the wonderment of the red dust by day and the sparkling desert sky at night.
RFDS (Queensland Section) Chief Executive Officer Meredith Staib said they’ll also have the chance to take to the sky on a Beechcraft King Air RFDS aircraft for a uniquely Australian scenic flight. This is the first time that an RFDS flight experience will be made available to the public, outside of medical or retrieval use.
“This week marks 94 years of the RFDS providing life-saving care to communities right across Queensland – including Birdsville, where we first touched down in 1928,” she said.
“This trip of a lifetime will allow the winners to experience firsthand what it’s like to be onboard with the Flying Doctor as well as take part in all that the Big Red Bash has to offer.”
With a stellar line-up of legendary Australian music artists headlining the festival from 5-7th July including Jimmy Barnes, Kate Ceberano, Missy Higgins, Kasey Chambers, Sarah McLeod, Jon Stevens, Richard Clapton and many others, the electric atmosphere of the Big Red Bash guarantees the winners a BIG exciting time at the Birdsville Big Red Bash.
There’s also the chance to be part of history and join thousands of other Big Red Bash concert goers to attempt to break the World Record for the most people dancing The Nutbush. This year the Big Red Bash will be aiming to beat their previous record of 2,878 people all dancing together to Tina Turner’s iconic song.
Kate Ceberano who is performing at the festival said, “I can tell you firsthand that the Birdsville Big Red Bash is one of the most amazing experiences you can have in your life. It is breathtaking to witness the magic of the desert and, of course, the music.
“The event has sold-out, so I’m super excited that the RFDS (Queensland Section) has launched this competition - I can’t wait to meet the winners there. The help and support that the RFDS provide to our rural communities is extraordinary and this is a wonderful way to support the life-saving work that they do.”
Included in the prize are flights, an RFDS flight experience, glamping accommodation, exclusive VIP tickets, and the chance to meet some of the performers.
