The Royal Flying Doctor Service of Western Australia (RFDS WA) has launched an awareness campaign in regional Western Australia to improve safety for patients and crews at small airstrips.

The RFDS WA utilises more than 700 unsealed or unfenced airstrips across the state and in some of the most remote places, years can go by in between landings.

Aerodrome managers and airstrip owners across the state are being encouraged to provide the RFDS with updated information about their airstrip. This includes the overall condition and length of the airstrip, details of lighting and perimeter fencing, the vermin risk and contact details for those able to conduct inspections before RFDS landings.

“The RFDS does everything within our control to keep our patients and crew safe, but we also need the support of regional communities to provide the most up-to-date information about airstrips and aerodromes,” said RFDS WA CEO Judith Barker.

Our pilots are the best of the best and are used to challenging conditions, but we need this information to make informed decisions before a patient tasking.

Updated airstrip details can be provided to airstrips@rfdswa.com.au

Owners are asked to provide the RFDS WA with updated information annually.
