The Royal Flying Doctor Service in Western Australia was proud to host its first Indigenous nursing student as part of a new partnership with Murdoch University.

Third-year nursing student, Camille Talbot, recently completed a four-week placement with the RFDS to learn more about emergency medicine in an aeromedical setting.

RFDS WA’s Head of Nursing, Paul Ingram, was grateful to have Camille onboard and for the opportunities student placements provide him and his nursing team.

“Partnering with the Murdoch University Indigenous Nursing Program doesn’t just benefit the students, it also means we can learn from students; how to engage, respect and improve our care of Indigenous patients,” said Paul.

“It’s all about learning and respecting the diversity of Indigenous culture and how we can partner with Murdoch to foster that. It may only be the first step, but as the partnership grows, we will have more students to learn from, and hopefully more indigenous staff.”

Camille was initially interested in a placement with the RFDS because of her passion for health care across rural and remote Australia.

“I was able to witness firsthand the impact of aeromedical services on vulnerable populations throughout Western Australia. This experience has truly inspired me to advocate for my patients, regardless of their needs and location,” said Camille.

Throughout her placement, the third-year nursing student participated in multiple retrievals to mine sites, remote stations and more.

“My time at the RFDS was incredible and I aspire to be back as a retrieval nurse one day,” said Camille.

Paul and his team were thrilled to welcome such an enthusiastic and dedicated student to launch the partnership.

“I received lots of great feedback from those who worked with Camille many commenting on her knowledge, skills and willingness to be part of the team and help out wherever she could,” said Paul

"We wish Camille all the best as her career progresses and look forward to meeting many more students as a part of this new partnership.”
