RFDS Western Operations is proud to announce the appointment of Director of Burns Service WA Professor Fiona Wood AM and McCusker Director of Lions Outback Vision Dr Angus Turner to its board.
Professor Fiona Wood is one of Australia's most innovative and respected surgeons and researchers.
A highly skilled plastic and reconstructive surgeon and world-leading burns specialist, she has pioneered esearch and technology development in burns medicine.
Professor Wood said she was extremely honoured to contribute her knowledge and experience to the RFDS and its board.
“The RFDS is a crucial organisation that delivers excellence in aero medical and primary health care across Australia,” she said.
“In a state where we are challenged by our geography, our vast and remote landscapes, the services of the RFDS is critical in ensuring state-wide health equity for all West Australians.
“At the Burns Service of WA, I have had first-hand experience working with the RFDS and I very much look forward to supporting and advocating for the essential service as a board member.”
Dr Angus Turner is a West Australian ophthalmologist based at the Lions Eye Institute.
An Associate Professor at the University of Western Australia, he is actively involved in the delivery of specialist outreach services to remote and indigenous communities in the Kimberley, Pilbara, Goldfields, Great Southern and South West regions.
Dr Turner said his work with Lions Outback Vision had provided him valuable opportunities to understand and response to the unique challenges of delivering health care in the most remote health jurisdiction in the world.
“I have a deep passion for ensuring Western Australia’s regional, remote and Indigenous communities have access to excellent health care – a commitment that aligns with the mission and values of the RFDS.”
RFDS Chair Sam Walsh said it is an exciting time to have both professors appointed to the board as the organisation enters into the next generation of service.
"Professor Wood and Dr Turner bring a diverse set of strengths and experience in the field of medicine and innovation to the board," Mr Walsh said.
"We look forward to their insights to support us in our mission to revolutionise the health outcomes of people living, working and travelling across Western Australia."
