The Flying Doctor’s newest retrieval service is now fully operational in Darwin and has already supported a number of Territorians to safely return home after hospital stays.

Low acuity medical retrieval

The new Low Acuity Medical Retrieval (LAMR) Service provides efficient and clinically safe air transfers for patients with stable or non-acute medical conditions and for patients with mobility and manual handling needs.

Patients can be airlifted home or to hospital via more than 200 locations across the Top End, Big Rivers, East Arnhem Regions and beyond.

“Flexibility and patient wellbeing are priorities in delivering this service to local patients when it’s time to leave hospital,” Darwin Operations Manager Sam Donovan said.

“We offer the option for patients to be escorted and cared for by a highly-qualified RFDS Nurse on their flight if there is a clinical need.

“We can also accommodate single-stretcher, double-stretcher or sit-up configurations onboard to best suit the patient’s mobility and travel requirements, including the use of our stretcher loading devices to help patients unable to use stairs.

“So far, the feedback has been very positive. We are proud to be able to offer an additional service option to our health partners for the ultimate benefit of people in the Top End.”
